Ancient Cross, King Sterndale.

Description

This cross stump which has been restored is situated on the village green of King Sterndale near Buxton in Derbyshire. It is unclear if it is a 'butter cross', a market cross, a boundary marker or a wayside cross. It is likely medieval but the much eroded 20th century inscription on the base appears to read; 'This ancient market cross was repaired by the parishioners in commemoration of the coronation of their majesties King George

VI and Queen Elizabeth. May 12th 1937'.
